How to remove dust mites and bed bugs from your mattress naturally

Dust mites are microscopic animals that like warm, damp conditions. They feed on d3ad skin cells shed by humans and animals, thus mattresses, pillows, and carpets are perfect environments. Bedbugs are tiny, reddish-brown insects that consume human and animal blood. They hide in gaps, crevices, and soft furnishings like beds. Bedbug bites can cause red, itchy welts and are frequently associated with anxiety and sleep difficulties.

How Do They Get Into Your Mattress?

1. Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate):

Baking soda is a good natural remedy for dealing with dust mites and bedbugs due to its dehydrating and antibacterial qualities.

Baking soda absorbs moisture, making it unsuitable for dust mites and bedbugs. It can also assist to remove odors from droppings.

How To Use It:

  • Sprinkle a sufficient amount of baking soda on the mattress and leave for 2-3 hours.
  • To completely remove the baking soda and dead mites, use a vacuum cleaner equipped with a HEPA filter.
  • Repeat every 1-2 weeks for the greatest results.

2. Essential oils:

Certain essential oils have natural insect repellent characteristics that work against dust mites and bedbugs.

Recommended oils include tea tree, eucalyptus, lavender, and peppermint.

How To Use:

  • In a spray bottle, combine 10-15 drops of your selected essential oil and 1 cup of water.
  • Mist the mattress lightly, taking care not to get it too soggy.
  • Allow the mattress to thoroughly dry before making the bed.

3. Steam Clean:

High temperatures can destroy dust mites and bedbugs, including their eggs.

How To Use:

  • Apply a handheld steam cleaning to the entire mattress, concentrating on seams, edges, and crevices.
  • Allow the mattress to thoroughly dry before covering it with bedding.
  • To eliminate the bugs, use hot water (130°F/55°C) and dry it on high heat.
  • Use a dehumidifier to maintain humidity below 50%.
  • Concentrate on the mattresses and surrounding areas, and utilize mattress protectors for added protection.

4. Preventing Future Infestations

  • Invest in zipped, hypoallergenic covers to prevent pests from invading the mattress and pillows.
  • Vacuum the mattress, bed frame, and surrounding surfaces frequently to eliminate dust, skin cells, and bugs.
  • Reduce clutter surrounding your bed to make it harder for bedbugs to hide.
